Youth Advisory Council

Amplify Voices of Youth with Lived Experience

Growth Works is excited to announce that its Juvenile Advisory Council (JAC) will be renamed the Western Wayne Youth Advisory Council in 2025 and operate as an advisory subcommittee of the Growth Works Board of Directors. Since its creation in January 2021, the council has provided youth with lived experience in the youth justice system a platform to influence positive change. The council has developed a handbook for youth and families, organized community activities, and promoted Credible Messenger practices, where youth with lived experience mentor others currently involved in the justice system.

The council’s efforts have made a lasting impact, with several members serving on the State of Michigan’s Juvenile Justice Reform Task Force. As the council evolves, its renaming and new structure will ensure youth voices continue to shape system improvements. “The Youth Advisory Council will provide a direct line of communication between the Board and former clients, enhancing our understanding of the services Growth Works offers,” said Board President David Sculati, a former client.

John Casteel, the council’s chair, expressed, “I’ve been involved with the juvenile justice system my entire life. I am committed to making lasting change for those still in the system.”

This transformation will also create a pathway for mentorship for youth under court jurisdiction, empowering them to advocate for change and become part of the solution. “It’s powerful to see youth use their stories to help others while healing themselves,” said Jen Sibel, Care Management Program Director at Growth Works.
